How to Arrange Pillows on a King Bed
Let’s break it down so you can find a setup that works for your lifestyle, budget, and bedtime routine.
Understanding Pillow Types and Sizes for a King-Size Bed
Not all pillows are created equal. If you've ever felt like the aesthetics are just off on your bed, it's probably because you had the wrong types and/or sizes of pillows. Here’s a quick overview of the most common types and what they’re best for:
- Standard pillows: Usually 20″ x 26″, great for sleeping and layering on smaller beds.
- King pillows: 20″ x 36″, ideal for sleeping and filling the full width of a king bed.
- Euro pillows: Large square pillows (usually 26″ x 26″) that are perfect for creating height and structure.
- Decorative throw pillows: These add texture, color, and personality.
- Lumbar pillows: Long, horizontal pillows that anchor the arrangement and add a finished look.
If you’re starting from scratch, picking at least one from each category (minus standard) can give you the most styling flexibility.
Choosing the Right Decorative Pillows
You don’t need a ton of throw pillows to make a statement. I like to look for covers with texture, some color contrast, and interesting patterns that can tie in the bedding and wall color. I like to keep my color palette consistent with the room too. I typically go with muted neutrals with a pop of a few other colors that can be found elsewhere in the room, such as the deep greens and navy in my case.
My favorite way to mix the pillows on a bed is with…
- One or two bold pattern pillows to act as the star of the show.
This is one of my favorite parts of pillow arrangements. I don't always love pattern everywhere, but rugs and pillows are my safe place. When you're setting up your king bed, think about adding one or two fun, patterned pillows that really grab attention and show off your personality. Just make sure you love it since you'll be seeing it every day. - A few solids in a rich or grounding tone.
Solid pillows help balance out the boldness of your pattern pillows, which are super important, and create a cool layered look with it becoming too intense. When choosing the tone, consider which colors will go well with your current bedding and decor, but also bring some warmth and depth. Getting that mix of colors and textures just right is the secret to nailing your pillow game on the king bed! - A lumbar or long bolster to bring it all together.
Adding a lumbar pillow or a long bolster to your king bed can really pull the whole look together. It's a great way to tie all your pillows in together while making everything feel complete. Placing it in front of your sleeping and decorative pillows not only looks good but also gives you extra support and comfort for when you're lounging around.
When it comes to lumbar and Euro pillows, these are the most important because they do a lot of the heavy lifting both visually and functionally.
Euro pilows are the perfect backdrop for all the rest of the pillows to give some vertical interest against your headboard.
A lumbar or bolster pillow is the perfect finisher for the front row of pillows to tie in all the layers without making it look overdone. This formula helps make sure you have enough interest without falling flat.
On our king bed, I used three Euro pillows in a deep green, two 22″ patterned pillows, and a large lumbar pillow with rich texture and some fun tassels. It made the bed look cozy and balanced all at the same time.
Layering Options to Arrange Pillows on a King Size Bed
When it comes to setting up pillows on a king-size bed, there are some great options that can match your style and vibe. Each of these setups brings its own style and flair, so you can pick one that matches your lifestyle and preferences perfectly.
Option 1: Minimalist (Functional and Styled)
If you want a no-fuss setup, this is a popular choice. Arranging pillows on a king-size bed in a minimalist way really hits the sweet spot between being practical and looking good, which is why a lot of people like it.
You generally start with two king-size sleeping pillows at the back for a comfy place to rest your head. Then, you add two Euro shams in front to give everything a neat look. To wrap things up, throw in a lumbar or bolster pillow at the very front for that extra touch of style.
This simple setup not only looks nice but also makes it super easy to hop into bed without having to move a ton of pillows around every night. The minimalist vibe is all about keeping things simple, making it a great choice for anyone who wants a trendy yet easy solution for their king bed pillow arrangement.
Option 2: Balanced Layers
This is my favorite option, and what I chose to do for my pillow arrangements. Start by placing three Euro pillows at the back against the headboard. They really add height and a touch of elegance, and are perfect for propping up against when you're ready to sleep.
Next, put two king pillows right in front, or like I did, your regular sleeping pillows. Then, throw in two decorative pillows, about 20” or 22” in size. I chose 22″ ones with a 24″ insert. This will bring some color and texture into the mix.
Lastly, don’t forget a lumbar pillow at the front to tie everything together. Not only does this layered look make your bed super stylish, but it also gives you the support you need, turning your bed into a cozy spot as well as a chic highlight of your bedroom.
The best part of this option is you really only have to move three pillows before bed… the two decorative and the lumbar. No-fuss!
Option 3: Full & Fancy
Another spin-off of the balanced option above is to keep the three 26″ Euro pillows in the back as well as your king or sleeping pillows. But, instead of doing two 22″, you would trade out that set for three 18″ or 20″ decorative pillows. And then keep your lumbar in front as well.
This option is great if you want to really elevate the fancy factor, but it does require moving more pillows each morning and night.
Choosing Pillow Colors that Go Well with Your Bedding
The nice part about choosing pillow colors is it can be a chance to really tie the whole room together. If your bedspread or comforter is neutral, like the creamy textured one we used, you can go bold with the pillows.
If your bedding is already colorful or has a cool pattern, it’s a good idea to go for some solid-colored Euro pillows or a textured lumbar pillow to balance things out. Regardless, you'll want to stick with the 3-5 color palette you originally chose for the room.

Common Mistakes in Pillow Arrangement
Of course, any time you are learning something new, you want to make sure you avoid making any avoidable mistakes. There are a few things to keep in mind that can really throw off your setup if overlooked. Here is my short list:
- Too many small pillows
These can get lost in the largeness of a king bed and give the feeling of more clutter instead a peaceful retreat. - Lack of a consistent color story
If you are someone who loves color, be careful. Mixing every color you love may backfire and end up creating chaos instead of cohesiveness. Try to stick to 2-3 complementary tones that go with your overall room design. - Not considering sleep function
There are few things worse than having too many steps when trying to get cozy for bed. Make sure your sleeping pillows are accessible and not buried every night. - Flat or overstuffed fillers
Buy inserts that are slightly larger than your pillow covers for a fuller look.
Tips from Interior Designers for Your Perfect Look
I've learned a lot of tips and tricks over the years from my favorite designers and trial-and-error, so I wanted to make sure to include some quick ones to help you when you go to do this in your bedroom.
- Use odd numbers for decorative pillows to make it more visually dynamic.
- Vary the textures with cotton, knit, velvet, woven, etc. They play well together.
- Always “karate chop” the tops of your square pillows for that pro look.
- Don’t ignore the lumbar. It's the best way to polish off the look.
What I Chose for My King Bed Pillow Arrangement
Alright, now that we've got the tips and tricks and all the things ironed out, let's breakdown what I did in my bedroom for my king bed.
First, I layered my three 26″ Euro pillows in a dark green with a linen-type fabric. I wanted something a little darker against the headboard and distinctly different than the wall color.
Second, I bought cream-colored silk pillow cases to elevate the cozy, spa vibes for our sleeping pillows. These are just a standard pillow for each of us.
Third, I added two 22″ pillows with a fun pattern that played off the rug pattern. It's not totally the same, but has a similar color scheme.
Lastly, I added a 14″x36″ lumbar pillow with a fun boho pattern. I tried three other patterns before landing on the one in the picture above. I kept thinking I needed the pattern to be lighter in color, but after trying a few lighter options, it was obvious I needed a mixture of dark and light.
I'm in love with this combo and the best part is I only have to move the front three pillows before bed. It takes me less than a second, which is about all I can handle before plopping into bed at night.

Frequently Asked Questions
This is the million-dollar question, right?! Generally, for a king bed, you'll want your sleeping pillows and then three euro pillows as your base. Then the rest is dependent on your personal style and how much space you want them to fill up. At minimum, you'll want at least a lumbar pillow in addition to the rest, so six to nine pillows will be the right number.
Great question! While king-size pillows perfectly fill the width of a king-size bed, you can still use queen-size pillows like I did if that is what you have or can afford. Just place two queen-size pillows on either side of the bed to achieve a similar effect. Using queen-size sleeping pillows may not give you the same luxurious, full feel, depending on which type of arrangement you choose, but they can still look great as part of your bed pillow arrangement.
Do you *need* euro shams? Not necessarily, but they sure do add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your king bed! The euro pillows and their shams create height and a solid backdrop for your other decorative pillows in front. If you want a more relaxed and minimalist look, you can skip the euro shams. But if you're aiming for that designer vibe, euro shams are definitely the way to go!
Luckily, I have an entire post on how I arranged the pillows in our guest bedroom. You can read the full tutorial here.
So, I actually use a body pillow as well. Basically, what I have been doing is leaving the standard pillows we sleep on down or tucked behind the Euro pillows and replacing the in between the Euro's and the decorative pillows with my body pillow, which also has a silk pillow cover. Looks just as good as the standard pillows there!

Your pillows are looking great. I usually end up with an extra one that I just love and want to use, but fits no where.
Thank you!! 😂 I know that feeling! The pillow game is rough haha!
