I'm so excited about today's update for my primary bedroom refresh for the One Room Challenge! I have been wanting to update my bedroom for a while now, but it's never really been a priority.
Do you feel the same? I felt like because my husband and I were the only ones who saw it, it wasn't worth the effort. Now I know, I was missing out! I'm not even halfway done with the updates I want to do, and already it's a vast improvement.
My biggest tip for you before reading this post is, if nothing else, add curtains to your bedroom. Now let's talk about what you need to look for when choosing your curtains. And I'll share at the end what I chose for my primary bedroom!

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Bedroom Curtains
Choosing the Right Curtain Color
Curtain color can be tough, but my rule is always to add color to your space with your curtains. It's one of the easiest ways to get color infused into your design. I typically choose an accent color.
This usually works well when you have neutral-colored walls, but sometimes it's worth exploring other options.
One option is to match your curtains with your wall color. If you are looking for an airy and spacious feel to your bedroom and you have lighter walls, you can pair the walls with similarly toned curtains. If you have darker walls and matching drapes, this can make a cozy and intimate atmosphere. So really, it just depends on the vibe you're going for.
The other option is to choose contrasting colors for a bold look. There are two schools of thought for this version.
If you are looking to energize your room, you could take something like soft pastel walls and add deep jewel tones or vibrant colors for your curtains.
If you still want to use contrasting colors, but not create high energy, you can opt for more subdued contrasting colors for your curtains. This is my favorite option.
Picking the Type of Curtains
Aside from color, the other thing to consider is the type of curtains you want. I typically lean towards sheer curtains because I love the airy feel of natural light shining through the windows. However, when you're talking about a bedroom, it's probably more practical to look into blackout curtains.
There are levels of blackout curtains, so it really just depends on the level of blackout you need/want. For my kid's bedroom, I got the deepest blackout ones, but for the guest bedroom shown above, I really loved these green airy curtains.
But of course, I wanted guests to feel comfortable. Since there are two windows in that room, I needed to figure out how to get a chance to use blackout curtains. My solution was to hide blackout curtains on their own curtain rod.
So secretly, I have cheap white full blackout curtains hidden behind the beautiful, airy green ones.
Regardless of what you choose, make sure you consider the vibe and functionality you want.
How to Hang Curtains for Maximum Effect
A lot of interior designers will suggest hanging curtains to be something you hire out. Honestly, as long as you know what you're doing, I think this is a place you can save money.
When in doubt, always hang your curtains floor to ceiling, but when you want multiple layers of curtains, use the thirds rule. You can read all my favorite tips on how to hang curtains using this rule here.
What I Chose for My Primary Bedroom Curtains

For my primary bedroom refresh, I chose to go with light, airy curtains. I wear an eye mask, so I didn't necessarily need to worry about blackout curtains and I LOVE the look of the pinch pleat ones.
I opted to hang the curtains at the very top to make the room feel larger. What do you think?
Next week, I'll be sharing more of the bedroom including the rug I chose. See you next week!
